In preparation of our route we have heard a lot about Rwanda. Clean and tidy it should be there even plastic bags are banned there. People should be rude and border controls would be lengthy and difficult. We have prepared ourselfs for a lengthy immigration procedure and grumpy customs officers, but the reality was different. The border is cleaned up, the officers are friendly and helpful, there are no additional fees. Can this be true? So it is with Africa, nothing can be relied upon. Not even on the "right side of the road", because in Rwanda you have to drive on the right side again.
We are very excited about the small state located in the middle of Africa and have read a lot.
The German Carl Peters, leader of the German East Africa colony, began those days with a racist division of social groups as "tribes" and later Belgian colonialists took this over without further questioning. Until then, the inhabitants lived more or less peacefully together. Today, basically two ethnic groups share the country: the Tutsis (approx. 16%) and the Hutus (approx. 83%). For decades there have been disputes between these groups, the zero point, however, the country achieved in 1994. This year, one of the most terrible genocide the world has ever seen took place.
On the evening of 6 April 1994, the aircraft of the president of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, was on approach to the airport of the capital Kigali. Against 08.30pm, the machine was hit by a missile. None of the passengers, including the president of Burundi, survived the crash. A few minutes later, members of the presidential guard, the army and militias began with the murder of members of the Tutsi minority and moderate Hutu opposition, which indicates a preparation well in advance. First death lists, date from 1993. The Hutus accused the Tutsis as the mastermind of the assassination.
With sticks, guns but mostly with machetes, troops of people went hatefully from village to village, from hut to hut and shot, killed or chopped their neighbors. In churches men, women and children who sought protection there, were brutally massacred in an incomprehensibly cruel way. In the next three months up to one million people, mostly Tutsis, lost their lives. The massacres are regarded as the greatest genocide in recent history. more...
